Most people are aware if the common causes of injury around their home, but sometimes need reminding of the ones likely to occur around the Christmas period. Here the St John's Ambulance team give you some top tips for a safe and happy Christmas...

• Don't place decoration near lights or over open fires.
• Make sure Christmas tree lights are properly wired, fused and with the correct size of bulb. If in doubt, ask a qualified electrician. Bulbs should not touch anything else and must have a free flow of air around them to ensure they don't overheat.
• There may be more hot dishes and pots and pans on the cooker than are usual so take extra care.
• The alcohol used to set fire to the Christmas pudding may cause burns and fires as the flames are not so easily seen.
• Food poisoning. Make sure all meat - particularly birds - is properly cooked and stored.
• Alcohol can impair the senses, leading to bad judgment and subsequent accidents.
• Small kitchens are also a hazard when many are helping, especially when moving hot items around.

• Candles should be properly extinguished. Never leave a lighted candle in an unoccupied room.
• Many of us visit friends and relatives at Christmas, beware that unfamiliar practices in unfamiliar surroundings can lead to accidents.
• Make sure there are no polished floors, loose mats, or children's toys left lying around.
• Keep the house warm. Elderly people are susceptible to low temperatures. The cold often makes them stiff and more likely to fall. They may not complain and could suffer pain and discomfort which goes unnoticed by their relatives.
• At all times it is advisable to have at least one smoke alarm fitted, and make sure it works.
